The Voice of the Lake

Winnipeg Symphony Concert Gimli  Russian-born conductor Andrey Boreyko held the position of Music Director of the WSO from May 2001 on through to May 2006. Also in 2006, German-born Alexander Mickelthwate was appointed as Music Director of the WSO. As a guest conductor, Mr. Mickelthwate is active both in North America and in Europe. In addition to his commitments in Winnipeg, Mr. Mickelthwate makes debut appearances with the NDR Symphony Orchestra, the Nurnberg Symphony, and the symphony orchestras of Jacksonville, Milwaukee, Rochester, Vancouver and the National Arts Centre Orchestra (Ottawa) during the orchestra’s contemporary music festival.

This was Andrey Boreyko’s first time playing outside of Winnipeg with the Winnipeg Symphony as a whole.  It was a free concert for the community presented by Prairie Ocean Centre of the Arts in Gimli Manitoba and sponsored by Manitoba Hydro.   The concert was held in the Gimli High School Gym due to weather it was up close and personal.  You felt like you were part of the orchestra.  Babies in their mother’s arms, toddlers, seniors, youth and adults alike all became part of the music.
I shall always remember this night, it was magical and helped birth my vision for The Voice of the Lake.
